How to Use the Right Mobile Plan in Singapore

Published by

So, you just transferred to Singapore. You already have a place to stay and all the paperwork is done. Now you need a phone and a mobile plan so you can start making and receiving calls and access the Internet. Choosing the right plan is important. If you’re on a budget then you need to choose a plan that will give you the most value.

You have many different options when it comes to mobile plans. It can be overwhelming for someone who is new to the country. Maybe you don’t even know where to start. Well, you can start right here. This guide can help you choose the right mobile plan for you.

General Options

There are also many different telecommunication companies in Singapore. All of them are offering some kind of deals to lure customers. You basically have three choices when it comes to mobile plans. You can choose a SIM-only plan, a plan with a phone, or a flexible plan. SIM-only plans don’t come with a contract. On the other hand, plans with mobile phones usually come with a 2-year contract. Flexible plans come with a phone but you’re not required to sign a contract.

SIM Only Plan

SIM-only plans don’t come with a mobile phone. This is just like a normal postpaid plan. But the difference is that this kind of plan doesn’t usually come with a contract. With this kind of plan, you’re required to pay a fixed monthly fee for services such as data, SMS, and talk time.

SIM-only plans should not be mistaken for prepaid SIM cards. This plan is still under the postpaid classification.

Plans with Phones

Plans with phones usually come with a 2-year contract. This means that you should stay with the telco for a minimum of two years. With this plan, you get a phone at a cheaper price. The biggest disadvantage of this plan is that it locks you in for 2 years. So for two years, you cannot switch to another telco even if you’re not happy with your current plan.

Flexible Plan

A flexible plan is basically a contract-free plan that comes with a phone. With this kind of plan, you get to decide how much you want to pay for the phone upfront and just settle the balance within a given number of months. An example of a flexible plan is the M1 iPhone 13 plan.

What Type of User Are You?

To choose the right mobile plan, you need to determine what kind of mobile user you are. This is important if you want to find the right plan that will match your needs. The price of a plan also depends on what services you use the most. You need to understand your needs. Are you a heavy data user? Or maybe you use a lot of talk time. Or maybe you just want to send regular SMS to your friends and family. Do you frequently make overseas calls? Knowing what services you use the most is an important step in choosing a mobile plan.
